Plot
The novel opens in the Caribbean, where Pauline, a glamorous but dangerous member of Jake Savage’s wider network, spots a supposedly dead adversary — Lady Pamela — alive on the island of St. Maarten. Her discovery sets off a chain of events that reactivates Savage’s team and thrusts them into a global pursuit.
Pauline’s suspicions trigger confrontations across the Caribbean and Mexico, while Jake assembles his operatives for a mission involving both personal vendettas and international intrigue. Their pursuit leads them through Cabo San Lucas, Colombia, and Grenada, where Pauline and her allies tangle with drug cartels, intelligence operatives, and ghosts from their past.
Parallel to these events, Jake is contracted by the U.S. State Department to rescue an imprisoned American journalist from Sudan. The mission involves high-risk negotiations with Sudanese authorities, covert helicopter operations, and a near-fatal crash landing during the extraction. The rescue unfolds against the backdrop of rebel activity and the lingering specter of Cold War-style power politics.
Interwoven throughout are flashbacks to earlier covert wars and high-technology projects, including experimental aircraft and clandestine weapons programs. Themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the blurred line between mercenary work and patriotism dominate the narrative.
The climax ties the disparate threads together, with Savage confronting enemies both old and new, while Pauline — operating under her nickname El Gato — charts her own dangerous path of revenge.
