A Comeback for the Ages: Smokin’ Oyster Brewery Reopens on Fort Myers Beach

Some call it the classiest open-air dive bar on Fort Myers Beach, while others cherish it as the ultimate oceanfront escape. Smokin’ Oyster Brewery—affectionately known as SOB—has been a cornerstone of beachside bliss for 25 years. Now, after weathering the storm—quite literally—it’s back, better than ever, and ready to reclaim its spot as a local favorite.

Hurricane Ian may have struck hard more than two years ago, but SOB has returned with resilience and style, reopening its iconic doors as part of Fort Myers Beach’s inspiring comeback story. Perfectly perched at the corner of Old San Carlos Boulevard and Third Street, this open-air gem is once again buzzing with life, laughter, and the unmistakable clink of glasses.

But the revival of SOB comes with an exciting twist. New owners Nick Ruland and Peter Ennis, celebrated for their success with Wahoo Willies and Snug Harbor, joined forces with Hank Leitnaker to usher in a new era for the beloved establishment. Their collaboration has added a fresh perspective while honoring the time-tested charm that keeps regulars coming back.

Despite some post-Ian renovations, SOB’s soul remains untouched. The original tables and signs continue to greet patrons, and the menu boasts the classic flavors that have made it legendary. Thanks to Miguel, the kitchen virtuoso who has been part of the SOB family for years, the culinary magic is alive and well. “Miguel uses his own sauce on the baby back ribs—it’s not too hot or spicy, just right for my taste,” Hank shared.

Returning favorites include the irresistible smoked fish dip, savory island bread, juicy double smash burgers, tender bay scallops, crispy coconut-breaded shrimp, hearty clam and conch chowders, garlicky crabs, and the ever-popular crunchy cod. Pair these with a cold drink and an ocean breeze, and you’ve got a recipe for paradise.

Smokin’ Oyster Brewery isn’t just a bar; it’s a testament to resilience, community, and good times. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a longtime fan, SOB is ready to welcome you back with open arms, a great meal, and another round of unforgettable memories. It’s open with cocktails and ice-cold beer as of this post.
